Introduction.

One of my assignments as a part of the Praxis program this week, was to write a blog post as if it was for a company blog. I could choose any company I wanted so I selected OBS Solutions just because I’ve used quite a few of their products for my truck and they do not have a blog yet so I felt they could use a post. 😉 They specialize in making specialty parts for 1987-97 Ford Trucks to update and improve on the original build.

The Benefits of the GM Mirror conversion kit on an OBS Ford.

Introduction.

Have you ever looked at a really clean looking truck and noticed some nasty rust streaks running down the side of the door from the side mirror bolts? Or maybe you’ve seen those rusted, dented up, factory mirrors on an otherwise beautiful truck. It can be a painful sight. 

Most guys don’t think there are any other options out there. New OEM mirrors are hard to find and if you do find a nice pair, they are typically appraised slightly under the value of gold. While most aftermarket set ups are much cheaper, their quality ends up being reflected in the price. Leaving you with mirrors that are made from subpar materials that rust all to quickly and vibrate in the wind so bad that they are borderline useless. So, what other choice is there? The answer to that question is the F-Series GM Tow Mirror Conversion Bracket’s by OBS Solutions.

These are brackets that weld onto your truck door overlapping about ⅓ of the corner vent window to which you can then mount 1990-98 GM mirrors of your choosing.The installation is quite straightforward using our provided instructions and guiding videos on YouTube.

Now, if you’re a OBS purist, you can stop making warding signs and throwing holy water on your laptop. This mod isn’t for everybody. If you are intrigued but still aren’t sure that it’s worth messing up the paint job on your door skins, it does offer a few really nice benefits to those willing to get over the fact that they’re putting a GM product on their precious Ford.

Improved Performance.

The first and most important benefit that this mod offers is the incredibly improved visibility. Most of the OBS trucks either come stock with the tiny paddle car mirrors meant for a taurus or those swing away mirrors that weren’t much of an improvement.

 With these GM mirrors, you can see so much more and so much easier due to its larger surface area. With the large mirror on top and the smaller convex mirror on the bottom along with the ability to extend the mirror out if needed, this makes it ideal for towing or if you just appreciate being able to see clearly when you’re backing up so you don’t have to go hunting marketplace for a new rear bumper. 

They provide this to you without affecting the functionality of your truck at all. The brackets are built out of heavy steel and the kit is designed to give extra strength and rigidity to your door shell so it can handle the access weight of the mirror. It also does not affect the operation of the beloved vent window much. It will still open about ¾ of the way, you will hardly notice the difference.

Creature Comforts.

The next thing that’s really nice about this upgrade is the convenience of the GM mirrors compared to your stock ones. The GM mirrors can be ordered with power, heat, and back-up light functions allowing you to have the modern convenience of a newer vehicle in your trusty Ford. 

It’s as simple as installing the mirrors and wiring them up. There are many videos on YouTube on how to do that but if you run into trouble, you can always feel free to reach out to us! 

They are also easier to find if one breaks somehow. A quick google search can yield you many options in a few seconds as opposed to searching a junkyard for who knows how long to find a half decent set of factory mirrors. Although we do recommend the mirrors from Boost Auto as we find them to be the best quality.

Lookin’ Good.

Finally, the addition of this mod to your truck can spice up the look of your build. You can opt for mirrors that have turn signals and/or running lights and there are many variations of those to fit your specific build. You can also get them in black plastic, chrome plastic, or get them color matched to your specific paint scheme. This gives you many different options for how much you want them to stand out and what you want your build to look like.  

Another way they can improve the look of your build is the mirrors are plastic and the mounting points get painted, so you’ll never have to deal with dents or rust streaks running down your truck as it ages keeping your paint looking sharp for much longer.
